Living In Bangor
Health
Bangor is the region’s center for healthcare and allied services.
The City is home to two major hospitals. Eastern
Maine Medical Center is a 411-bed facility providing specially and intensive care services
to the northern two-thirds of the state and one of three designated
centers in the Maine Trauma System. St.
Joseph Hospital is a 100-bed
community hospital operated by the Felician Sisters. Both hospitals
are accredited by the Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
Located in Bangor, the Acadia Hospital is one of the few facilities in Maine that offers a full range of in-patient and outpatient services for individuals in need of mental health and chemical dependency services. The State operated Bangor Mental Health Institute is also located in the city.
Unlike many less urbanized areas, the presence of such institutions in Bangor insures a large base of physicians and other medical specialists who can meet virtually any physical or mental need.
For those in need of long-term nursing or supportive living arrangements,
the Bangor area offers a wide variety of skilled nursing homes, assisted
living facilities, and retirement village options. Again unlike some
areas of the country, the Maine long-term care industry is highly regulated
and closely monitored by the State to insure quality care, and Maine
and Bangor are home to some of the finest such facilities in the country.
