What are the rules regarding abandoned properties in Bangor?
In October of 2013, the City Council passed an abandoned building ordinance. Part of the requirements of the ordinance is that owners of a vacant building must obtain a vacant building registration permit within 60 days of the building becoming vacant. The vacant building registration permit is issued by the Code Enforcement Office. The permit allows Code Enforcement to properly track abandoned properties, order inspections, and request building maintenance repairs as needed in order to protect the structure from trespassers and from deterioration by weather.
The abandoned building ordinance is intended to prevent dangers to health and safety, promote responsible management, provide a safe neighborhood for residents, safeguard property values, and, provide for prompt contact with owners should issues or emergencies develop at abandoned properties.
