The last two editions of Macmillan's Places Rated Almanac rated Bangor as the best North American metro area with a population under 100,000.

Healthcare is a very important segment of
our service economy. Providers include two major medical hospitals:
Eastern Maine Medical Center and
St. Joseph Hospital.
Acadia Hospital offers a full range of in-patient and outpatient
services for individuals in need of mental health and chemical
dependency services. The State operated
Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center, formerly the Bangor Mental Health Institute, is also located in the city. The
presence of these institutions provides Bangor with a large number of medical
specialists who can meet virtually any physical or mental need along with a
full range of related healthcare services.

Transportation. Bangor is located on I-95, the major north-south
corridor on the East Coast. I-395 provides a quick access to State Route
1-A, which connects to the Maine Coast. Canada is 90 minutes away on
State Route 9. Virtually any location in Bangor is only ten minutes
away. If you are tired of long commutes, gridlock, and traffic
frustration, Bangor’s the place to be.
Bangor International Airport is served by major carriers and offers
daily flights to and from major cities in the Northeast, national and
regional hubs, and Florida and the Caribbean. Full immigration and
customs services, plus a highly rated general aviation division
distinguish Bangor amongst airports in the Northeast.
Inter-city bus service is provided by both
Concord Trailways and
Greyhound, with frequent service to Boston and beyond. These
services provide direct connections to Amtrak service in either
Portland, Maine or Boston.
The BAT Community Connector provides local
bus service to the communities of Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Veazie, Orono
and Old Town. This regional service operated by the City of Bangor is
especially convenient for those who prefer not to rely on private
transportation and serves many of our major employment and activity
centers including the Bangor Mall and the University of Maine at Orono.
Bangor is within convenient highway travel distances of cities in Maine
and the New England/Atlantic Canada region. Augusta, the state capital,
is about an hour away. Portland can be reached in two hours, Saint John
New Brunswick in three, and Boston and Montreal in four to five hours.
Leisure. Our area provides excellent shopping, entertainment, sports, and cultural experiences in both small and large venues. Located within an easy drive of ocean, mountains, rivers and lakes, you can enjoy four seasons of outdoor recreation here.
