Our mission is to provide all citizens of Bangor affordable, quality recreation experiences in safe, aesthetic settings.
The department is a diverse organization that offers a variety of active and passive recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
We invite you to take advantage of our recreational programs, facilities, and open spaces. Please watch this site as well as local media outlets to keep abreast of upcoming programs and events.

Parks
The Department is responsible for the maintenance of all public parks throughout the city. In addition, we maintain many school grounds and all athletic facilities. There are approximately 30 park and play areas located
in Bangor, including specialized facilities such as Cameron Stadium, Mansfield Stadium, Sawyer Arena, Essex Woods Recreation Area, and the Union Street Athletic Complex. All together, Bangor offers approximately 500 acres of open space maintained by our Parks Division. Click here to visit our Parks and Facilities
In the spring and summer seasons, this division is also maintains two outdoor municipal pools as well as the fountains located in parks around the city.

Recreation Division
Our Recreation Division offers a comprehensive recreation program including both seasonal and annual events.
The annual Father/Daughter Valentine Dance is held in February; the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race is on the third Saturday in April; the Mother/Son Dance is in May; and the Labor Day Road Race is held on Labor Day. Seasonal offerings include the Supervised Playground and Swimming Pool programs in the summer.
Informational fliers and brochures are available for current programming. Program fliers are often distributed through Bangor Schools and are available at our office. We also provide information to the various media outlets. Contact our office for information on any program offering.

Outdoor Swimming Pools
We offer two outdoor swimming pools during the summer months, generally from mid-June until late August.
Dakin Pool is located at the end of Pine Street across Stillwater Avenue from Broadway Park. Pine runs North-South between Broadway and Essex. Dakin will open on June 20th and offers general swimming from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. No fees are changed for general swimming.
The Beth Pancoe Aquatic Center in Hayford Park at Union and 13th Street will open on June 20th. The Center offers a daily general swim from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Family Swim Monday through Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m starting July 2nd., and Adult Lap Swim Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. Swimming lessons are also available.

Bangor Municipal Golf Course
On three separate occasions, Golf Digest has rated this 27-hole championship course among the Top 75 Public Courses in the U.S. The Golf Course is located at the end of Webster Avenue, which is easily accessible from Hammond Street.
The course also offers a full, 15-tee public driving range, two practice greens, and a complete pro shop and restaurant. PGA professionals are available for group and private lessons. The golf course welcomes corporate and club tournaments and outings. Among the many tournaments held each year is the Greater Bangor Open, hich is held in July.

How to Get There
From I-95, take Exit 183, go west on Hammond St. for .6 mile, take a right on Webster Ave. go .6 mile to Clubhouse.
From Main St. (U.S. 1A), look for Buck St., at traffic light 1/2 block north of the Paul Bunyan Statue. Go 1 mile west on Buck to Webster Ave. Left on Webster .4 mile to Clubhouse.

Sawyer Arena is a seasonal indoor ice arena located on 13th Street. The ice surface is regulation size and a variety of groups make use of the arena during the skating season. Renovations completed in 2002 have expanded locker facilities, created a new and improved concession area, and improved spectator seating. Skate sharpening service is available.
Groups, schools, and organizations that make use of Sawyer Arena include Bangor Youth Hockey, Bangor High School, John Bapst High School, Foxcroft Academy, enobscot Valley Hockey Club Travel and House teams, Penobscot Figure Skating Club, PVHC Girls, Women’s Recreation Hockey Club, Dover Old Timers Club, as well as the Parks and Recreation Learn to Skate Program. During the season, time is also allocated to skating for the general public. Outdoor skating is also provided in several City Parks during the winter.

Several rooms are available for meetings and other functions. Room availability depends on scheduling. Room rental fees varey based on the room and the timing and duration of your event. Please click on the link on the upper right for rental rates and room dimensions.
