4/6/2015 - Habitat for Humanity Home to be Constructed on Lot Acquired through the City of Bangor's Neighborhood Stabilization Program
Last week, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor announced a partnership with a local family to construct a new home in Bangor. Families who partner with Habitat for Humanity help build their new home and purchase it at a discount with a minimum down payment, taking advantage of a 30-year, zero-percent interest mortgage loan. The new home will be built on a lot that the City of Bangor donated to Habitat for Humanity. This lot was initially acquired by the City of Bangor through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funding. NSP was established by the United States Congress for the purpose of stabilizing communities that have suffered from foreclosures and abandonment through the purchase and redevelopment of such properties. Previously, the double lot was occupied by a burned out, abandoned house. The lots were cleared and cleaned, then split into two lots—one was donated to the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor for construction of a single-family home and the other lot will contain a new, NSP funded single-family home.

Habitat Board President Seamus Higgins stated, “Like all Habitat builds, this one will require a community effort. But, this wouldn’t be happening at all if the City weren’t committed to neighborhood revitalization…This is a win for the City, for the neighborhood, and for the Umbles. We couldn’t be happier to serve as the catalyst for so much positive change.”
