The City of Bangor's Public Health and Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for the position of General Assistance Caseworker.
This position is responsible for the following duties:
DUTIES:
Interviews prospective clients upon application, determines assistance eligibility, determines immediate needs, issues vouchers, and completes other paperwork as required.
Maintains computer-based files to track client data and ensure compliance with state regulations.
Collaborates with Maine DHHS and other agencies as necessary when determining eligibility.
Assigns clients to the workfare program as appropriate.
Refers clients to other available resources including, but not limited to, TANF, SNAP, Social Security, and MaineCare.
Responds to client emergency situations including eviction and utility shut-off.
Assists the Community Services Manager and other GA caseworkers in investigating fraud.
Assists the Housing Team with administrative functions including, but not limited to:
- Phone call follow-up
- Grant Fund Reporting
- Client/Agency mailing
- Landlord communication
- Documentation Retrieval
- Appointment scheduling
- Voucher document processing
- Fraud and Social Security follow-up
- Client/Vendor mailing
- Program clerical support
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Community Services Manager.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Degree in social work or work experience as applicable.
Thorough knowledge of the scope of human services as it relates to public assistance programs.
Thorough knowledge of State and City General Assistance regulations and ordinances and the ability to apply such regulations to ensure compliance.
Ability to maintain accurate computer-based client files.
Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, clients, vendors, other social service providers, and members of the general public in a professional, tactful and courteous manner, occasionally under stressful situations.
Ability to work with clients who are challenged by mental health or substance abuse issues.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs duties according to accepted practices of the social work field and department policies and procedures. Uses independent judgment in making decisions having direct impact upon specific individuals and/or cases. Work is reviewed for overall soundness in judgment, general technical adequacy, and conformance with practice and policy. Unusual problems or circumstances are discussed with supervisor at the caseworker’s discretion. Reports directly to the Community Services Manager.
This is a full-time position with a pay range of $22.94 to $30.86 per hour and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
