10/30/2017 - City of Bangor Storm Response
Widespread power outages continue in the City of Bangor in the wake today’s severe storm. Power is beginning to be restored in the City, but many areas will likely remain without power through this evening and into tomorrow. In response, City staff have been coordinating resources to ensure the public’s safety.
Charging / Warming Stations
Bangor Parks and Recreation, located at 647 Main Street, will be open until 8 PM this evening for those needing to charge electronic devices or a warm place to stay. The facility will close at 8 PM and re-open tomorrow at 8 AM. On the east side, the public are welcome to go to the Bangor Public Library, located at 145 Harlow Street until 8 PM this evening. The library will re-open tomorrow at 10 AM.
Traffic Alerts
Many traffic and streetlights are without power, which can create hazardous nighttime driving conditions. In addition, utility and public works crews will be working on the street making repairs. Therefore, it is recommended that the public delay any unnecessary travel this evening.
The Broadway corridor remains without power. City crews are working to establish temporary signals to alleviate traffic. For all intersections without working traffic lights, the intersection becomes a four-way stop. Temporary stop signs will be installed on Broadway and other streets in the City. Motorists are urged to approach intersections cautiously.
Safety
All generators must be run outside and the public should exercise caution when using candles during a power outage. Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have what they need to stay warm and safe. Emergency personnel are available to make welfare checks and the public should not hesitate to call 911 to report concerns
