State of Maine Vehicle Registration Deadlines

Bangor, Maine: The City of Bangor is advising motorists to be aware of vehicle registration deadlines, as the State of Maine has issued an updated executive order updating those requirements. The State order is here: https://www.maine.gov/governor/mills/sites/maine.gov.governor.mills/files/inline-files/Vehicle%20Registrations%20EO.pdf

Please review these deadlines if you have an unregistered new vehicle or if your registration has expired:

  • Vehicles purchased between January 1, 2020 through March 15, 2020 and vehicles with registrations that expired before March 15: Register immediately.

  • Vehicles purchased between March 15-May 31, 2020 and vehicles with registrations that expired during that period: Register no later than Dec. 18, 2020.

  • Vehicles purchased June 1, 2020 through September 30, 2020 and vehicles with registrations that expired during that period: Register no later than Feb. 16, 2021.

  • Vehicles purchased on or after Oct. 1, 2020 and vehicles with registrations that expired during that period: Register as soon as possible, in accordance with Maine motor vehicle law:

    • Private sale vehicles cannot operate without registration plates the vehicle must be registered to legally operate on Maine Roads.

    • Temporary plates on new vehicles are valid through the expiration date on the plate and the vehicle must be registered prior to the temporary plate's expiration to avoid penalties.

  • Vehicles with registrations that expire in October should be registered ASAP or no later than Oct. 31 to avoid penalties.

The Treasury Office, located on the first floor of City Hall, is open from 8 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday.

To renew your vehicle registration:

  • As a convenience for Bangor residents, car registrations can be handled online through Rapid Renewal here: https://www1.maine.gov/online/bmv/rapid-renewal/

  • You will need your current valid registration, current mileage and insurance information.

For a new purchase vehicle registration:

  • If you purchased the vehicle from a Maine Licensed Dealer, then you will need the window sticker (if the car is brand new), a Title Application Form (usually blue), Invoice showing Sales Tax was paid, proof of insurance and the current mileage. Bring all of these items to the Treasury Office to pay the excise tax.

  • If you purchased the vehicle in a private sale, then you will need the prior title (if the vehicle is a 1995 or newer) signed by the previous owner listing you as the purchaser, a dated bill of sale that clearly identifies the vehicle, including the vehicle identification number, the seller's name, your name as the purchaser and the sale price, proof of insurance and current mileage. Please note that the City does not complete private sale registrations so after paying the excise tax you will need to go to the State of Maine Department of Motor Vehicles located in the Airport Mall on Union Street. The State will require you to fill out a new title application and a sales form. Both of these forms are available in the Treasury Office for your convenience.
