Public Information Officer
In 2007 the Bangor Police Department created the position of Public Information Officer (PIO). The PIO serves as a liaison between the police department and all media outlets. Although most often the PIO works with local media outlets, statewide and an occasional national news syndicate may call for information depending on the case or incident. The PIO must follow strict laws and guidelines when releasing information with attention to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The PIO is responsible for reviewing all of the daily reports and releasing to the media upon request, general facts and circumstances and names of people charged or arrested for crimes. The PIO is a bi-weekly guest on the George Hale/Ric Tyler talk radio show for one hour on WVOM 101.3 Augusta and 103.9 Bangor talking about various topics. The radio show is live on Thursdays and rebroadcast during the week.
