Programs are administered by the City of Bangor's Community and Economic Development Department. Please contact 207-992-4233 for more information or to see if you may be eligible, submit a pre-application using our Neighborly portal (link).
The Community and Economic Development Department is working with Efficiency Maine for the purchase and/or installation cost associated with heat pumps or weatherization in eligible single-family and multi-family homes located within the City of Bangor. The City will offer grants of up to $2,000 (per single-family home or per unit for multi-family homes) which can be used in conjunction with current rebates available through Efficiency Maine. The City is also offering grants of up to $2,000 for weatherization only (no heat pumps) of rented units (single- or multi-family) in the City. Our goal is for the heat pumps or weatherization to be very low or no cost to eligible low-income residents in Bangor. In addition to city and state rebates, until the end of 2025, there are also federal tax credits available for energy efficiency improvements, as well as state tax credits for energy efficiency projects in designated historic districts and sites.
Grants for this program are being made available through the City's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, as well as City climate action funds. Eligibility is based on a homeowner's income relative to how many individuals live at the home. In order to be eligible, the home owner's gross income must be at or below the level of the corresponding household size. For grants to landlords for rented units, some funding is available for units rented to any income, while the remaining funding is only for units rented to low-moderate income tenants.
