Alarm Permits & Application

The City of Bangor has an ordinance that requires burglar/emergency alarms in the city to be permitted. The purpose of that ordinance is to establish regulations that apply to the operation of burglar and emergency alarms within the City of Bangor, to encourage the installation and maintenance of reliable alarm systems, and the responsible use of those. It is an additional purpose of this ordinance to ensure that police officers have current and pertinent information about alarm locations. Alarms permits are renewed annually.

The ordinance allows for alarm holders to be billed for police responses to false alarms (when alarms have been activated and no crime has occurred). That fee schedule is as follows:

  • 1st to 3rd responses are free
  • 4th to 8th responses are $25 per response
  • 9th and subsequent responses are $100 per response.

These fees are billed semi-annually.

Avoid Fees

  • Make sure all alarm users and key holders are properly trained to use the system, including how to cancel a false alarm.
  • Be sure all doors and windows are properly closed and locked before arming your system.
  • Be sure motion detectors are properly adjusted and cleared of obstructions. Something as simple as balloons moving when the air conditioner comes on can set off a motion detector.
  • Have an arming delay of at least 60 seconds and arrange with your alarm company NOT to call the police if the alarm is activated immediately after is has been armed. Have them call a keyholder instead.
  • Read and follow the instructions in your owner's manual.

Following these simple steps can reduce the amount of time spent by Bangor officers responding to false alarms, and can save you money.
